2022/23 ITAL & RL Scholarship Announcement

ELIGIBILITY 

ITAL & RL Scholarships are open to current undergraduate students who are declared majors or minors in the Department of Romance Languages Department at the time of application. All students (undergraduate) must be enrolled as full-time UO students during the 2022/23 academic year in order to receive a scholarship award. 

Review the details below to learn more about each award’s criteria and eligibility. Eligible students are encouraged to apply, regardless of citizenship and/or FAFSA eligibility. SCHOLARSHIPS SUPPORTING ITALIAN STUDIES

Giustina Family Italian Fund Scholarships 

Italian Major Scholarship - $2,000 This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Italian majors. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and have already earned at least 20-course credits* of the Italian major.

Italian Minor Scholarship - $1,000 This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Italian minors. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and have already earned at least 16-course credits* of the Italian minor. 

RL Major with Italian Concentration as a First Language Scholarship - $1,800 This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Romance Languages majors with Italian as a first language. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and have already earned at least 16-course credits* of the RL major. 

RL Major with Italian Concentration as a Second Language Scholarship - $500 This scholarship provides financial assistance for undergraduate Romance Languages majors with Italian as a second language. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) and have already earned at least 8-course credits* of the RL major.

Romance Languages Department Scholarships 

In addition to Giustina Family Italian Fund scholarships available to students of Italian, the RL Department provides the following scholarships that support Italian Studies.

Emmanuel Hatzantonis Scholarship – Two $2,000 scholarships to carry out Italian studies in Italy with a UO-sponsored program. Open to majors or minors in Italian or Romance Languages.

Leona Kail Scholarship - $500 scholarship for study in the Romance Languages Department. Open to all majors and minors in the RL Department.

Perry J. Powers Scholarship – One $2,000 scholarship for study in the Romance Languages department. Open to all undergraduate majors and minors in the RL department.

Italy Study Abroad Scholarship (GEO)

A scholarship of up to $10,000 is available for 1-2 students accepted for participation in the year-round exchange program with the University of Pavia, Italy. In the event there are no applicants for the Pavia exchange in any given year, the scholarship funds may be awarded to students participating in other language and culture programs in Italy, including Lecce, Siena Italian Language & Culture, or Exploring the Dolomites. REQUIREMENTS

The following criteria apply to all Giustina Family Italian Fund scholarship applications.

The Giustina Family Italian Fund provides a one-time scholarship to ALL Italian majors/minors and RL majors with a 3.0 GPA or higher. To apply to these Italian scholarships, you do NOT need to submit a statement of purpose or letters of recommendation, just an unofficial UO transcript.

The following criteria apply to all Romance Languages Department scholarship applications. These applications must include:

1. A statement of purpose in applying for the scholarship (500-word limit). The statement should include personal qualifications, professional interest in the target language, and intended use of the scholarship.
2. A current unofficial transcript (minimum requirement: 3.50 GPA in major/minor coursework and 3.0 GPA overall)
3. Two letters of recommendation from UO faculty members (submitted via email, please use the departmental form, see below). One letter must be from a Romance Languages faculty member.

For the Emmanuel Hatzantonis Scholarship scholarship, you must include also a description of the Study Abroad program that you plan to attend. Documentation attesting acceptance into a program may be requested by the RL department.
